#Hashtags are becoming more and more popular, with some of us even finding ourselves '#hashtagging' out loud in conversation.
First of all, you might be asking why people use #hashtags at all?
Well, using an appropriate #hashtag can give your tweet or Instagram post added visibility and relevant engagement after it’s posted. This gives you access to an appropriate audience that may not have even been aware of your existence.
BUT, did you know there are some major ‘dos and don’ts’ when it comes to #hashtagging. We’ve put together a simple guide to help you win your social media game.
1. Make it relevant
It’s pointless using #hashtags if they’re not relevant to whatever it is you’re posting. Not only that, but it makes you look a bit silly if you’re posting a photo of a flower and putting #me or #blonde - just because they’re popular hashtags, it doesn’t mean it’ll bring you more engagement.
2. Don’t forget Twitter
With the huge rise of Instagram, so many users completely forget about using #hashtags on Twitter. Tweets with #hashtags are likely to get twice as much engagement as those without, so those little #hashtags are absolutely vital!
3. Don’t use too many
On Instagram it is recommended that you use around 8-12 #hashtags, reducing significantly to just 2 on Twitter. Using too many #hashtags damages your brand image and can also have an effect on your SEO score.
4. No to Facebook
Facebook does not like #hashtags, (which is ironic when it’s owned by the same group as Instagram). You are much more likely to get engagement on your Facebook post if you avoid posting #hashtags on there all together.
